You are bidding on an original WW2 vintage German Paratrooper (Fallschirmjager) Gravity knife. These knives were used by the elite airborne forces (Heer / Luftwaffe and SS Falschirmjager) along with aircrew and are one of the most desirable knives of the Second World War. Their primary purpose was to enable an entangled paratrooper to cut his parachute rigging quickly in order to commence fighting. Needless to say these are VERY DIFFICULT to acquire, especially in Australia. Condition: The knife is in very good, combat used condition and was 'souvenired' by a US GI in Normandy in 1944. It has hand engraved unit markings on it, and anybody familiar with modern military history will the significance of the HJ insignia on the grip, as the 12th SS HJ were in the AO at the time that this was picked up. The number '14' is also lightly carved into the grip towards the top, what this refers to, one can only speculate: 14 kills, 14 battles, 14 jumps? Regardless, an interesting and rare piece of kit which somehow made it's way from a paratrooper to a young Panzer soldier. The knife is made by 'SMF Solingen' and is marked as 'Rostfrei' (rust-free / stainless)The blade has been hand sharpened at some point. The blade slides out easily but cannot be locked into an extended position as the spring catch has been removed (this was common practice for these items after the war, so they could NOT be used as concealed 'flick' weapons on 'civvie street') Both walnut grips are worn, although intact. Markings as indicated above. The lanyard ring is missing, although the securing stud is still in place. The 'pig sticker' blade works well and folds away nicely.
