WWII USAAF A-2 FLIGHT JACKET LOT~ 358TH BOMB SQUADRON ~A-2, UNIFORMS ~ PAPERWORK ~ PHOTOS Click to see full size image. Click to see full size image. This WWII USAAF A-2 Flight Jacket Lot was purchased by a friend of mine and I am listing it for him. It is as obtained and nothing has been changed or added. Lot is very complete with unquestionable provenance and has a cassette recorded interview with the Vet. I mistakenly had photos of the wrong "crusher" the first time I listed this lot and there is another tunic (Ike) included that was in a different box. Everything should be pictured now. The WWII AAF A-2 Flight Jacket is very clean overall and leather remains excellent/serviceable. There are NO rips, tears or losses anywhere to the jacket exterior (see photos). The nomenclature label is present and shows manufacture by the quality maker J.A.Dubow Mfg. Co., Chicago, ILL (see photos). Size is shown as 44 but the jacket fits the mannequin as a size 40-42. Waistband & cuffs are original and have the usual snags & losses (see photos). Zipper run is the original small tooth Kwik (see photo). Upper left front has stitch holes indicating a period leather namestrip that was removed (see photo). Just below is a period painted 358th Bomb Squadron patch (see photos). The paint shows expected wear & light crazing and painting is absolutely guaranteed period done. Original lining has light age soiling overall and remains solid with NO losses to the collar areas (see photos). There is a Army Air Forces acceptance stencil next to the nomenclature label (see photos). Measurements for this jacket are: shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back - 19.5 inches, shoulder seam to the end of the cuff material - 24.25 inches, base seam of collar to bottom of waistband material - 24.75 inches. Armpit to armpit across the front - 24 inches There are three uniform jackets included with thhis lot. The included Regulation Army Officers four pocket Tunic is a large size as well. It is complete with an Air Corps patch to the upper left arm, rank bars to the shoulders, a maker marked clutchback Bombardiers wing to the left chest and period ribbon bar below (see photos). Ribbons indicate the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross, multiple Air Medals and the European Theatre Medal with two battle stars (see photos). There is also a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon to the right chest (see photos). Interior label shows the tunic was produced by a coded manufacturer during 1942 and size is shown as 42L (see photos). A second tunic included is the Vet's Ike jacket. It is also a large size with a period made bullion wing & 8th AF patch (see photos). Shoulders have sewn cloth rank bars and the ribbons are sewn on as well (see photos). The Ike was apparently made from a four pocket tunic and has a label similar to the one mentioned above (see photos). The third uniform tunic is the seldom seen theatre made officers field jacket. This type of jacket has a four button front with waist sizing closure and two slash pockets to the sides (see photos). It has an unmarked bombardiers wing to the left chest, a theatre made 8th AF patch sewn to the left upper arm and bullion rank bars to the shoulders (see photos). Label to the interior show manufacture in the UK during 1944 (see photos). Veterans visor hat is a true "crusher" that folds easily and is maker marked "Bancroft" at the top of the sweat shield and "Flighter" to the sweatband (see photos). Flexible and clean overall it has no problems. Just about everything else related to the Vet's WWII military experience is also present/included from his bombardier graduation announcement to his well signed "short snorter" (see photos). There are two photos of the Vet & his crew (one 4.5x3.5 and one 7.5x9.5) as well as photos of the Vet as an aviation cadet and as a commissioned officer (see photos). His photo ID, his ID bracelet, a large sheaf of papers listing all missions & flight time, his commission document, class book from bombardier school, unit history of the "Hell's Angels", his "business card" and his taped interview relating his combat experiences (see photos). Not shown but also included is another notebook of related wartime paperwork, mission photos and miscellaneous souvenirs. This Veteran passed away in 2006 atn the age of 83 and death notices & obituary are also included. The 358th Bomb Squadron flew B-17's and was part of the 303rd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. The were engaged in long-range strategic bombardment operations over Occupied Europe and Nazi Germany from September 1942 through May 1945. The 358th was one of the most highly decorated squadrons in the Eighth Air Force, attacking enemy military and industrial targets as part of the United States' air offensive against Nazi Germany. The 303rd Bomb Group was one of the first VIII Bomber Command B-17 Flying Fortress units in England. The "Hell's Angels" were the first B-17 group to complete 25 combat missions in June 1943 and went on to fly more than 300 combat missions, more than any other group. This is a very interesting WWII 8th AF 358th BS A-2 lot. It was a direct purchased grouping and would be a super centerpiece for any aviation or 8th Air Force collection. Everything is guaranteed original, period and as described. It would be tough to find a better representative WWII 8th AF Bomb Squadron Lot. ~ Bid With Confidence ~NO RESERVE - 5 Day Auction Terms and Conditions I MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO IDENTIFY, DESCRIBE & PHOTOGRAPH THE ITEMS AND CONDITIONS.
